Both trained by the authorities and experienced in operations, our team has the skills to teach you customs. Project Coordinator Elena Mitrofanova explains our Finland customs training in this article.

“Working with you to reduce spend and risks”

Most of our customs clearance staff in Finland are trained by the Finnish customs authorities, and we provide guidance and training based on our operational experience.

Currently, we have four standard sets of training. In addition, we may provide you with a fully customised training. Our standard trainings begin with the fundamentals one and two; basics of import and export, helping your business to be compliant and avoid complications by ascertaining which paperwork you need, how to work with a customs partner in terms of representation paperwork, and generally understanding the customs clearance process as a whole.

The third is much more valuable and is more for people and organisations who are already trading for some time and know the process. This is where we are working with you to reduce spend and risks by optimising your purchasing and supply chain processes. With this training, we can really align your teams across the whole business so that logistics, purchasing, and procurement all have customs in mind.

Our fourth package revolves around classification, understanding the fundamentals of what makes a commodity code, how preference works, and how your obligations can change with your goods classification – such as reporting for CBAM or the need to obtain a customs licence

“A broader approach to optimizing costs”

Where we excel with the third training package is ensuring that the right customs questions are asked throughout the procurement process, not when the goods are already due to arrive. In this way, we can help you to take a broader approach to saving money.

For example, if the goods are already on the water we can only help you to suspend or reduce taxes by implementing a duty management procedure. At that stage, costs relating to the origin, the freight, and other variables such as carrier free time are all already locked in.

It is an unfortunate and common issue that many purchasing and logistics teams within the same company do not interact with each other so much, and you can end up overpaying in general or being hit with additional duties by not taking a holistic approach.

Our training solutions not only increase the level of internal expertise of individuals but also helps to create a shared understanding within commonly siloed teams such as purchasing and logistics. Effective collaboration here is a prerequisite for efficient supply chain management.

“We don’t teach anything you don’t need”

Although the training is offered and defined as four separate packages, the content of what we provide is bespoke to your business. The core of each training remains the same, as there are core requirements for import/export/etc, but the rest is tailored to be as relevant and useful for you as possible. For example, we seek to use real-life examples relevant to your organisation.

Making customs easy is what we do, so it’s important for us to ensure that we don’t teach anything you don’t need or that isn’t a relevant consideration.

“If you don’t know what you need, we will guide you”

Sometimes, you can be unsure of where there are gaps in your team’s knowledge. In this case, we can have a conversation and make a suggestion, or complete a customs health check to find out where the gaps are. We are your customs partner so, if you don’t know what you need, we will guide you. Simply get in touch and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.
